Arizona woman arrested after trying to stop robbery, shooting worker instead

An Arizona woman has been arrested after she opened fire to stop a shoplifter but struck an employee, authorities said.

Nya Reyes, 45, told police that she was walking her dog Saturday morning when she saw two people running from Ace Hardware in Phoenix, AZFamily reported.

Reyes said she brandished her gun to stop what she believed to be a theft taking place.

She fired two shots towards a vehicle as one of the runners drove away from the scene, but struck the other, a man, who was actually an Ace Hardware employee, authorities said.

The employee was transported to the hospital, where he was treated for a gunshot wound to his knee, police said.

Reyes was arrested on charges for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and discharging a firearm in city limits, the outlet reported.

Police haven’t said whether they’ve tracked down the shoplifter after they fled the scene.
