Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie found himself in the middle of a political prank involving Montana’s gubernatorial race — thanks to a shoutout he did on Cameo.
Christie got duped into delivering a personalized message to “Greg,” who is actually US Rep. Greg Gianforte, the GOP candidate in Montana’s governor race squaring off against Democratic Lt. Gov. Mike Cooney, NJ.com reported.
“I have a special message today for you, Greg. I understand you left Jersey sometime ago for work. That happens sometimes,” Christie says in the video, wearing a yellow fleece and sitting in an armchair. “Mike and your whole family, they want you back here … Get yourself back to Jersey quick, and let’s have some Jersey fun and be Jersey strong.”
Christie’s video message was tweeted by Cooney Thursday morning.
“a special message for @gregformontana,” it said.
The Democratic Governors Association touted the stunt, sending out a press release from Cooney’s campaign with the video saying, “Even former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie agrees — Greg Gianforte should go back to New Jersey.”
The 55th governor of the Garden State joined Cameo days ago, requesting $200 a pop to deliver personalize messages to others. He says he’s donating the cash to the nonprofit Center for Great Expectations, which helps people with mental health and substance abuse issues in Jersey.
Christie, who said he had no idea about “Greg’s” real identity, was not amused.
“Shame on @CooneyforMT. Same to @DemGovs,” the former GOP governor tweeted Thursday afternoon. “I am doing Cameo to benefit a NJ charity that shelters & treats drug & alcohol addicted pregnant women & they send this misleading request and then push it out as a shot of @GregForMontana. I SUPPORT Greg Gianforte for Governor-absolutely!”
Christie also told NJ.com, “This is the kind of dirty underhanded stuff done by the DGA to exploit a charity that is caring for drug and alcohol addicted women and it should be repudiated immediately by all the leadership of the DGA.”
Christie’s tweet included a screenshot of the Cameo “order details” showing a request for a “pep talk” for “Greg.”
“Governor – huge fan (and so glad you’re doing better)! My buddy Greg (who is also a big fan!) has been working out of state the last few years & me and his family have been trying to get him to come home to NJ. Could you give him some encouragement?”
Gianforte is originally from New Jersey.
Chaired by New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy, DGA is a group that helps elect Democratic governors.
Its spokesman David Turner told NJ.com that Murphy “had nothing to do with this Cameo.”
The video was paid for by the Cooney campaign, the report said.
When asked for comment, a campaign spokeswoman only replied with a “shrug” emoji, the outlet reported.
